Language Information
SIL's Ethnologue lists 37 African languages spoken in Senegal, though the number of speakers of some languages is uncertain. French is the official language and there are 21 languages that are officially recognised as national languages. Several languages are used as a means of wider communication, notably Wolof, Serer-Sine, Pular, Mandinka and Jola Fonyi.
Almost all languages in Senegal fall within the Atlantic and Mande divisions of the Niger-Congo family and most of the smaller language groups are found in the southern part of Senegal. Many of these languages are also spoken in neighbouring countries.
